Saint of the day: Don Bosco, an example of a teacher and educator
St. Jean Bosco loved the youth, he prioritized education based on simplicity, trust and love. There were things he hated.
He was born in a poor house but he loved games that made all the neighbors happy (acrobatics...). He became an orphan when he was young because he lost his father, François, when he was only 2 years old and he was raised by his mother, Marguerite, who was very strong on the virtue of prayer and treating guests well.
After
enough time to prepare, he became a priest, dedicated himself to many young
people who were living badly because of the lack of work in the city of Turin
(Italy). Even though the resources were low, no one turned back and came to
him.
The more
they grew, the more he built companies
He prioritized education based on simplicity, trust and love.
In this
regard, he founded an institution called "Oratory" for the boys to
prepare them to become priests (Salésiens de Don Bosco). And for the girls,
together with St. Marie-Dominique Mazzarello, he founded a community of nuns
(Congrégation des Filles de Marie-Auxiliatrice) to take care of their peers.
Don Bosco was born on August 18, 1815, and died on January 31, 1888.
He was unable to reach an agreement with his bishop about his youth, and he used to tell his followers these quotes:
« On ne peut fonder le pouvoir sur la menace, on ne peut fonder l'autorité que sur la confiance. »
« Sans affection, pas de confiance. Without confidence, without education. »
« Persuasive prevention requires a lot of time and availability. »
« The youth are the most delicate and the most precious part of the society. »
« Do everything you can. Dieu fera ce que nous ne pouvos pas faire. «
Like the other saints we remember today, Marcel, Tobias, Marcella and Celian, St. John Bosco prays for us and inspires the youth of today.
